Return of the Battle of the West: Showdown Reborn

Return of the Battle of the West: Showdown Reborn

After a seven-year hiatus, the Battle of the West is set to return, reigniting a fierce and prestigious rivalry that has a rich history within the rugby league community. For the first time since 2017, this celebrated event will take place over the weekend of the 14th and 15th of September, with matches held at Federation Forest on Saturday and Windsor Sporting Complex on Sunday. This marks the revival of a cherished tradition that began in 2013. As we look back Ken McNaught was the then Director of Refereeing & Development.

The Battle of the West is a unique event that sees the champions of the Penrith Junior League face off against the champions (or higher-ranked teams) of the Parramatta Junior League Grand Finals. It ran for five years, from 2013 to 2017, and quickly became a hallmark of excellence, showcasing the finest junior rugby league talent from both regions. The atmosphere, competitive spirit, and sense of pride that surrounded these games were unmatched, making it one of the most prestigious junior events in the area.

As we look forward to this year’s competition, we’re reminded of the incredible legacy the Battle of the West has built over the years. For referees, coaches, and players alike, this event is not only a test of skill but also a reflection of the dedication and passion that fuels our game. It's more than just another match – it’s a celebration of rugby league at its finest.

This year, the referees chosen to officiate these matches have been rewarded for their consistency throughout the final series. Their selection is a testament to their hard work, and they will now carry on the tradition of excellence set by those before them.
