Pat Mackey Calls Full Time
After 21 incredible years, Parramatta District Rugby League Referees Association Life Member, Pat Mackey, has officially announced his retirement from on-field officiating following the conclusion of the 2026 season.
Pat’s journey began as a youngster back in 2004. He immediately immersed himself in refereeing culture, establishing himself as a reliable cornerstone of Parramatta Referees both on and off the field. A two-time Parramatta A-Grade Grand Final Referee, Pat etched his name into a select group of referees who have taken out the Patron's Trophy on more than one occassion. Beyond his on-field duties, he gave back generously through coaching and development, serving on numerous sub-committees, and holding the role of Assistant Executive Officer from 2013 to 2018. His selfless service was recognised in 2014 when he was awarded the prestigious Darkie McCall Award for service and contribution off the field.
After working his way up the local ranks, Pat excelled in the Junior Rep Squad and earned the Michael Ryan Award in 2016 for his outstanding commitment to his peers. That same year marked his graduation to higher levels as NSWRLRA Graded Member #994, transitioning through the touch judging pathway.
Over an 11-year graded career, Pat compiled an extraordinary resume that includes 367 NSW Grade matches, 30 Finals Series appearances, and six Grand Final appointments across NSW Major Competitions: the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership (2017), Jersey Flegg (2018, 2022), Sydney Shield (2019, 2026), and the Ron Massey Cup (2025). His career total features 72 NSW Cup, 125 Ron Massey Cup, 125 Sydney Shield (including 2 as referee), 44 Jersey Flegg, and a President’s Cup appearance.
Pat finished his career with a big appointment, with his 367th and final match coming as a touch judge in the recent Sydney Shield Grand Final at Campbelltown Stadium – a testament to his enduring high standards and resilience.
Quiet, unassuming, and immensely respected, no one has ever had a bad word to say about Pat. A true family man who recently welcomed his third child, he leaves an incredible legacy as a role model to his peers. Congratulations Pat on a brilliant career, and thank you for your unwavering service to Parramatta Referees over a number of years.
