Rising Star Crowned Junior League Referee of the Year

Parramatta Referee Marcus Rowe has been recognised as the Parramatta Junior League Referee of the Year for 2025, marking another milestone in his impressive rise through the ranks.

A member of the Beyond Bank Parramatta Referees Emerging Squad, Marcus continues to build on the strong foundation he set in 2024 when he was awarded Rookie of the Year in his debut season. His calm approach, consistency, and leadership on the field have earned him respect from coaches, players, and fellow officials.

Marcus also balances his own playing commitments while refereeing, often choosing to officiate over playing to honour his commitment to officiating. That dedication has paid off, showing his maturity and passion for refereeing at such a young age.

Director of Officiating Ethan Murray commended Marcus on his achievement “Marcus is one of our up-and-coming referees whose name you’ll hear in years to come,” Murray said. “It’s a well-earned award that recognises his effort, discipline, and consistent performances. His professionalism and commitment to the game have stood out all season.”

Murray added “As part of the Beyond Bank Parramatta Referees Emerging Squad, Marcus continues to develop through advanced training and mentoring. His decision-making, composure, and willingness to learn make him a strong example for other young referees.”

Marcus’s journey from Rookie of the Year to Junior League Referee of the Year in just two seasons shows what can be achieved with focus and dedication. He continues to represent the values of the Jericho Group Parramatta Referees Association and the strength of its development program.

When asked how he has managed both commitments, Marcus said “Balancing playing and being a referee definitely has its challenges. At times games or training sessions clash, but I’ve learnt how to manage it well. Both my team and the referees are really supportive. Being both a player and a ref actually helps — I understand the players’ perspective better, which improves my communication and game management.”

Reflecting on what has surprised him most about refereeing, Marcus said “I didn’t realise how much of refereeing is about communication. People think it’s just about penalties, but most of the job is talking to players and keeping the game flowing fairly.”

He also spoke about how refereeing has changed his view of the game “Refereeing has completely changed how I understand rugby league. You see every detail — from tackle types to positioning — and it’s helped me appreciate how the game really works.”

Marcus credits the Beyond Bank Parramatta Referees Emerging Squad for accelerating his development. “Being part of the Emerging Squad has been huge for me,” he said. “The extra coaching from NRL and NSWRL referees, training through the off-season, and reviewing my games on HUDL has helped me improve and gain confidence.”

As for the biggest lesson he’s learned this season, Marcus said it comes down to composure. “I’ve learnt to slow down and stay calm. That’s made a massive difference in how I control games and make decisions under pressure.”

Marcus’s journey highlights the opportunities available within Parramatta Referees where members can grow, learn, and achieve success both on and off the field. His story is a great example of how balance, commitment, and support can help young officials reach their potential.
