Vale Matthias Kimari (1994 – 2025)

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Matthias “Maddy” Kimari, born on June 22, 1994, who passed away on January 6, 2025. Matthias was a beloved member of our Association, joining us in 2023. In his time with us, Matthias officiated an impressive 96 games across both Saturdays and Sundays, with his highest appointments being U15 Division 1 on Saturdays and A-Grade Women’s Division 2 on Sundays.

Matthias showed exceptional promise as a match official. His eagerness to learn, improve, and contribute was inspiring to all who worked alongside him. In just two years, he earned the respect and admiration of the membership for his dedication and positive attitude.

A Journey Across Continents

Born in Kenya, Matthias moved to Australia to build a life filled with new opportunities and challenges. His partner, Lucy, shared, “He has no family in Australia—his parents remain in Kenya, and he has no siblings.” Despite this, Matthias found a second family within our Association, a place where he felt a true sense of belonging. Lucy remarked, “He loved this place.”

Lucy also fondly recalled how excited Matthias was to receive his training and on-field clothing, noting that such opportunities were rare where he grew up. It was a proud moment for him, reflecting how far he had come.

Memories and Legacy

One of Matthias’s proudest moments was attending our Annual Awards Night, where he was honoured with a medal—a testament to his hard work and commitment. He cherished the sense of community that came with training sessions and game days, always striving to be the best official he could be.
